Global warming effect
or
tomorrow’s problems today
The early signs of climate change are showing up across vastly differing landscapes:
- from melting outposts near the Arctic Circle
- to disappearing glaciers high in the Andes;
- from the rising water in the deltas of Bangladesh
- to the "sinking" atolls of the Pacific.
Reports from a Warming Planet takes you to parts of the planet where global warming is already making changes to
life and landscape, and demonstrates how climate change is no longer restricted to scientific modeling about the
future. It's happening now.
So, what is causing it? The global warming effect is caused by all kind of pollution into the atmosphere what
causes the protecting ozone layer to thin out and eventually disappear. Without the protecting ozone layer the
sun's deadly radiation is allowed to reach the surface of the Earth. The Earth warms up more then usual. If we take
the number of factories polluting into the air and add a number of cars and delivery vans running daily in the
world we get a huge mass of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere every day.
There is one more thing you need to know: the use of fossil fuels is adding to the net carbon output as they
have been locked away for millions of years and when burned are being released into the atmosphere.
What other evidence you need to understand that the global warming is already in progress and if we
do not react today it will be too late tomorrow!
What can I do today? There are many ways of getting greener from getting paper less statements to using
energy saving bulbs but we would like to show you some of the more efficient and easy ways of saving our
environment. One of them is starting using solar panels. It is free energy of sun which with the help of solar
panels gets converted into the current and could be used anywhere. Another way of getting free energy is wind
electric generators and in combination with solar panels could get very useful. If you noticed that this energy is
absolutely free so you will save a chunk of money as well as our environment. These methods we call in-direct CO2
emission reducers. But in order to directly reduce CO2 emission you have to start using biodiesel. This will make a
big change for our climate to the better.
What is biodiesel?
Biodiesel is fuel made from renewable resources such as vegetable oils or animal fats. It is biodegradable and
non-toxic, and has significantly fewer emissions than petroleum-based diesel when burned. Biodiesel functions in
current engines with no modifications, and is a possible candidate to replace fossil fuels as the world's primary
transport energy source. Biodiesel is as biodegradable as sugar and is less toxic than table salt. About 20% of
vegetable oil is glycerin. Biodiesel is created from a simple chemical reaction of mixing about 80% of vegetable
oil with about 20% alcohol and a catalyst. The catalyst separates the glycerin from the veggie oil. This process is
called transesterification. As you can imagine, this vegetable oil without the glycerin, called “biodiesel”, is
smoother, runnier, and thinner (less viscous) than normal veggie oil. It even has better lubricity (better
lubrication for your fuel system and engine) than petroleum based fuels. This adds life to your engine and fuel
system.
Biofuels are carbon neutral. This means that the
carbon they release when burned is not adding to the net carbon output of the planet as it has been absorbed by the
plants grown to make the fuel.
So, let us summarize what we have just learned:
It is environment friendly as the carbon monoxide released is used by plants;
It is better for engines as it is much cleaner then petroleum-based fuel;
It is made from renewable sources so there is no damage caused to our environment.
Did you know…
Originally diesel engines were invented to run on biodiesel. A few years later black oil refinery industry came
with idea of using today’s regular diesel in these engines. As it was plenty of waste after producing the petrol
from black oil they found the way of using that waste to produce regular diesel. It was and it is cheaper to
produce regular diesel then biodiesel. We all know from our life experience that paying less for something would
normally mean getting something of lower quality. But back then no one was worried about global warming because
there was no sign of it.
When signs were seen and question about global warming were raised BioFuel has been favoured by governments.
Governments are making the biodiesel cheaper to buy by reducing the taxation upon it.
In addition, today's UK diesel is a mix of 2.5% with biodiesel (97.5% regular diesel and 2.5% biodiesel). This
is another step from government towards reducing CO2 emission. The UK government has made a commitment to European
Union saying that by 2010 the amount of biofuels used in the country will be at 5% from total usage of all fuels so
all diesel by 2010 will contain 5% of biodiesel.
Using and storing biodiesel
In order to start using biodiesel all you need to do is to buy some. No modifications are needed to the engine -
BUT, please note that some cars are not compatible with biodiesel and this is normally indicated somewhere near
fuel tank cap.
The only suggestion we give is to change your fuel filters after using about 5 fuel tanks in your car or van as
biodiesel will clean your entire fuel system and will maintain it clean for as long as you use biodiesel meaning
longer lasting engines.
BioDiesel is far cheaper then regular diesel so you will be saving yourself some money depending on your average
use of fuel.
You also can easy mix it with regular diesel as we know that today’s diesel is already a mix.
If you want to store biodiesel you can do so without getting any special permission. As it is made out of
natural components it can be treated as water. There are no rules or any other regulations on storing or using
biodiesel from health and safety point of view. Start using biodiesel today and save environment, your car and your
money!
